There are some vehicles that show their age when they get up in years and start to become finicky and unreliable. Impressive Performance

For the last year of the third generation, the 2014 Tahoe sported a 5.3L V8 that produces 320 hp and 355 lb-ft of torque, which is already plenty of power. But for the new generation, the 2015 Tahoe got a newly-tuned version of the engine that produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. In addition to providing more power, the fourth-gen EcoTec3 V8 is also more efficient, upping the Tahoe’s city mileage from 15 MPG to 16 MPG and its highway mileage from 22 MPG to 23 MPG. That adds 26 miles to the SUV’s total range, letting you go 468 miles between fill-ups. The engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly and seamlessly so you can enjoy the ride.

The capable 5.3L V8 is the sole option on 2015-2017 Tahoe models, but if you look at model years 2018-2020, you’ll find a second option in the lineup: an even more powerful 6.2L V8. This engine delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque and is only available on models fitted out with the Rally Sport Truck performance package, which was introduced for the 2018 model year. With this powertrain, you’ll get an extra boost of speed, allowing you to go from 0 to 60 in just 5.7 seconds, according to testing done by Car and Driver magazine.

When you’re taking the Tahoe out for a grand adventure, these capable powertrains will surely come in handy along the way. If you’re heading out into rural areas, then you want to know that you have the quick acceleration needed to safely pass slow-moving vehicles on two-lane roads. And if you want to bring along some extra supplies, being able to tow a trailer can also come in handy. The Tahoe’s towing capacity varies based on how it’s configured, but no matter what, you can expect a solid figure from a fourth-generation model: anywhere from 7,800 lbs up to 8,600 lbs. That’s plenty for just about any camping trip, even if you like to pack in a lot of specialized equipment or modern conveniences.

A Comfortable Interior With an Array of Convenience Features

With three rows of seating, the Tahoe has enough room to bring along the whole family and maybe a few friends. One big upgrade for the fourth generation is fold-flat seating in the second and third rows. This makes converting passenger seating into storage space easy, making the Tahoe more versatile. For added convenience, power-folding seats are available as early as the 2015 model year, so you can reconfigure the interior even if you’ve got a sore back from driving long distances or sleeping funny on your latest camping trip.

Extra legroom was also added during the upgrade to the new generation, with the second row gaining an extra two inches. This not only helps your backseat passengers stretch out and get comfortable on the road, but it also makes it easier for them to get in and out of the SUV. The interior also has plenty of soft-touch materials throughout and looks aesthetically pleasing, especially if you get the top-tier Premier trim level.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Technology is always an important factor for used car shoppers. Technology moves fast, so drivers are understandably worried about getting a model that’s too old to give them the convenience features they’re looking for. Luckily, the fourth-generation Tahoe has plenty of tech that’s still considered state-of-the-art today.

On the 2015 model, the dashboard features a color touchscreen with Chevy’s MyLink system, allowing you to hook up an Apple or Android smartphone, use voice commands, and more. There are also up to six USB ports throughout the vehicle so everyone can charge their devices. The 2020 model comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and five USB ports, with two additional USB ports and a rear-seat entertainment system available as add-ons.

Safety Is Standard

Several new safety features were added to the Tahoe for the fourth generation, which means you can find used models with useful driver-assistance tech to help keep you out of trouble on the road. The 2015 Tahoe has available features like Forward Collision Alert to warn you when a crash with the vehicle ahead of you is imminent, Lane Departure Warning to let you know when you may be unintentionally drifting, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to keep you aware of your surroundings while backing out of a parking space.

You can also find the Safety Alert Seat on some 2015 models, a unique warning system that uses vibrations on the left, right, or both sides of the seat to both warn you about a threat and let you know instantly where it’s coming from. Other features you can find on the fourth-generation Tahoe include Side Blind Zone Alert, Teen Driver technology, IntelliBeam Automatic High Beam Headlights, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
