The Chevy Equinox comes equipped with a suite of safety and driver assistance features, including the innovative forward collision alert. The collision alert feature in an Equinox is a useful tool that alerts you of any potential front-end collisions. That’s only a small part of the Chevy Safety Assist package that comes standard on every 2023 Equinox model, regardless of which trim level you choose. With so many fantastic features on the Equinox, it’s easy to get distracted by its powerful engine and spacious interior, only to overlook the remarkable ways it can help keep you safe on the road.

On the one hand, as a Chevy Equinox dealership, we here at Parkway Chevrolet appreciate the fact that there’s so much good stuff on this small crossover SUV that it’s easy to overlook something like innovative safety. But on the other hand, we think it’s a real shame that more people don’t recognize all of the ways the Equinox can help get you home safely each day. We think there’s nothing more important than safety features on a vehicle, and the fact that this package of advanced tools is standard on every model is truly spectacular. Let’s take a look at what the Safety Assist package includes, as well as some extra options that you can choose for your Equinox.

The Chevy Safety Assist Package

Forward Collision Alert

As we said earlier, Forward Collision Alert does just what it sounds like; it alerts you to the potential for a front-end crash. This is designed to work with vehicles ahead of you, warning you when there is the potential to collide with them, such as when a car in front of you hits its brakes or when you are beginning to get too close to the vehicle in front of you.

Automatic Emergency Braking

Working in tandem with the forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking can provide hard braking when a potential crash is detected and the driver has a delayed response to it. If you apply the brakes as the driver, it can enhance your hard braking to help improve your stopping distance to avoid a crash.

Front Pedestrian Braking

Similar to the previous two technologies, front pedestrian braking detects when a pedestrian steps out into the road ahead of you and warns you of it. It can also automatically hard brake for you or enhance your hard braking to help avoid a collision. These technologies function best when driving below 50 mph and during the day.

Lane Keep Assist With Lane Departure Warning

This technology provides gentle steering assistance to warn you when you might be unintentionally drifting from your lane. It can provide additional warnings if issues continue or you fail to correct and stay within your lane; neither system functions if you use your turn signal or detect you are intentionally steering out of your lane.

Following Distance Indicator

The following distance indicator warns you when the gap time between your vehicle and the one ahead of you becomes too short. It will warn you if you seem to be tailgating someone and can help you recognize when you’re following another vehicle too closely, not giving yourself time to stop if they brake suddenly.

Additional Safety Features

Rear Vision Camera

Standard on every Chevy Equinox, a rear vision camera gives you a clear view of the area behind your vehicle through a rear camera and the interior display. It functions when you’re in reverse at low speeds and can help you with parking.

Teen Driver Technology

One of our favorite standard systems on the Equinox, the Teen Driver technology is a suite of features you can enable on a designated key fob, so it only works for a driver you choose. This will activate certain things, like limiting music volume and keeping the vehicle from shifting out of park if the driver’s seat belt isn’t fastened. There’s even an in-vehicle report card that you can check to see how your teen driver is doing and what areas need work. This tool is perfect for a teen just starting to drive by themselves and gives parents the peace of mind they need when their child is out on the road.

Front and Rear Park Assist

This available safety feature provides you with distance alerts to warn you when nearby objects are detected that you might not be able to see at low speeds. When properly equipped, the Chevy Equinox can have both front and rear park assistance, which is perfect for spotting curbs, toys left in a driveway, and other obstacles while parking.

Adaptive Cruise Control

While standard cruise control lets you set a speed, allowing it to stay there until you turn it off or hit the brakes, available adaptive cruise control will automatically maintain a speed and gap time from the vehicle in front of you. This allows the Equinox to slow down and accelerate as needed to remain at a safe distance from other traffic and reduces strain on you while driving.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

The available rear cross traffic alert can detect when a vehicle or person is approaching your vehicle and about to cross behind it while you’re in reverse. It’s a great feature for any time you have to back out of a spot in a parking lot or out of a driveway, particularly onto a busy street. Since this uses radar technology, it can detect vehicles you can’t see and works even if your vision is obstructed.

Lane Change Alert With Side Blind Zone Alert

Two available technologies that function together, the side blind zone alert warns you whenever a vehicle is hiding in your Equinox’s blind spot. Similarly, if you activate your turn signal to change lanes, the lane change alert will warn you if a quickly approaching vehicle is detected or a vehicle is in your blind spot to help you avoid a collision. While nothing can replace safe, careful driving, this is a terrific piece of tech for those moments when someone sneaks up on you.

HD Surround Vision

This available safety technology uses multiple cameras, used by other safety systems on the Equinox, to create and display a digital overhead image of the area around your vehicle. It works at low speeds, much like the front and rear park assist, to give you a fantastic look at what’s around your vehicle while parking or navigating tight quarters. This truly innovative piece of technology is perfect if you often park in crowded lots or parking garages.

Safety Alert Seat

Chevy Equinox models with the standard safety features use a combination of audio and visual cues to warn you when alerts and warnings activate. The available safety alert seat uses vibrations through the seat so that you can feel the warnings, as well as hear and see them. This creates an additional layer of notification that’s perfect if you prefer to stay focused visually on the road or prefer to have more alerts active when something goes wrong. It even uses vibrations on different sides of the seat to precisely tell you which direction the potential danger is coming from.
