Few automakers can boast of a lineup as comprehensive as Chevrolet. Whatever your lifestyle or line of work, Chevy has a truck for you. That is because Chevy has been making trucks in different sizes with various cab designs, engines, and trim levels, so it isn’t too difficult to find a Chevy truck that is exactly what you are looking for. Best of all, it isn’t too hard to find a great deal on a used Chevy truck. If you are looking for a used Chevy truck in Houston, then stop by Parkway Chevrolet, where you can take advantage of the Parkway Advantage.

However, if finding a used Chevy truck is easy, choosing which one is right for you can be tricky. After all, how do you decide between a Silverado or a Silverado HD? Or maybe you should get the smaller Colorado instead? And then there are a dozen different cab, bed, and engine configurations to decide between. Well, sit back as we explain to you the advantages of each of these great trucks so you can find the right one for you.

Chevy Colorado

The Chevy Colorado is a midsize truck that truly packs a punch. The current model hit the roads in time for the 2015 model year and features three different engines, two different drive trains, and two cab configurations. The standard engine of the 2020 Colorado is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission that produces up to 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, depending on the model year. This is strong enough to tow up to 3,500 pounds of trailer and haul up to 1,435 pounds in the bed.

There are also two other engines, a 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The V6 engine provides up to 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to tow up to 7,000 pounds. The Diesel is even more powerful with its 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, giving the Colorado a best-in-class tow rating of up to 7,700 pounds. Those are truly amazing numbers for a truck the size of the Colorado. What’s more, the Colorado has an available long bed that can fit up to 49.9 cubic feet of cargo.

The current model of the Colorado comes in either an extended cab with two full-size doors and two half-doors or a crew cab with four full-size doors. The crew cab also has a larger back seat, while the extended cab provides slightly better towing ratings when equipped with the same powertrain. The Colorado also gives you the choice of rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The prior model of the Colorado, which was discontinued in 2012, did offer a regular cab with two doors and only one row of seats. So, if this is what you are looking for, then you will need to find an older used Colorado.

The Chevy Colorado is also a great model for off-road enthusiasts with the ZR2 and Z71 trim levels. Chevy even offers a special edition Colorado ZR2 Bison that is just packed with exceptional features. Two of the key advantages of a midsize truck like the Colorado are that it gets great mileage and is easier to handle than its larger siblings. For example, a Colorado with the diesel engine gets up to 20 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. So, if you want a used truck that packs a big punch in a small package, then a used Colorado is the one for you.

Chevy Silverado 1500

The flagship of the Chevy truck lineup is the Silverado 1500. This is the most versatile of all Chevy trucks, providing great features, roominess and comfort for coworkers or family members, and the ability to tow heavy loads. What’s more, the Silverado 1500 comes in plenty of different trims and special editions, making it easy to find one that has all the features you desire. The current model is the fourth generation of this venerable truck and was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The latest Silverado 1500 comes in three different cab configurations with your choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drive and five great powertrains. For those who want a Silverado 1500 primarily for commercial purposes, Chevy offers a two-door regular cab. If you want to seat more people, you can choose between the extended cab and the crew cab, which is ideal for folks who also use their trucks for domestic purposes.

The base engine on the current Chevy Silverado 1500 is a 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V-6 gas engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It produces 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, allowing the Silverado 1500 to tow up to 7,900 pounds. This can be upgraded to a very fuel-efficient 2.7-liter turbocharged I-4 with an 8-speed automatic transmission that gets 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque and is able to tow up to 9,300 pounds. There is also a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 with either a 6-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission. The Silverado 1500 with this engine produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and has a maximum towing capacity of 11,500 pounds.

If you want a powerful engine with a lot of torque, Chevy offers the Silverado 1500 with a 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel I-6 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This produces 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, with a maximum towing rating of 9,500 pounds. The most powerful engine on the 2020 Silverado 1500 is a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This can help your Silverado 1500 tow up to 13,300 pounds by producing up to 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

If you are looking for an older model of the Chevy Silverado 1500, you should keep in mind that Chevy did not begin offering the Turbo-Diesel and the turbocharged I-4 engines on the Silverado 1500 until the 2019 model year. However, the 4.3-liter V-6, 5.3-liter V-8, and 6.2-liter V-8 were all introduced in 2014 for the previous model of the Silverado 1500. No matter which engine and configuration you choose, with a used Silverado 1500, you are getting a truck that is durable, dependable, and versatile. If you are buying a used truck with the idea of having it serve many purposes, then the Chevy Silverado 1500 may be the one for you.

Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD

Heavy-duty trucks earn their name by being the go-to choice for tasks that other trucks cannot handle. Whether carrying heavy loads or towing big trailers, a heavy-duty truck is built for hard work. If you need to tow heavy machinery for work or a boat or camper for pleasure, then you should consider either a used Chevy Silverado 2500HD or 3500HD. These two trucks both give you a choice between two powerful V8 engines and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The key difference between the two is that the Silverado 3500HD has a reinforced suspension and is available in a dual-rear-wheel configuration.

From 2015 to 2019, the standard engine was a 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 gas engine that produces 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. This allowed the Silverado HD to tow up to 14,800 pounds of trailer. The Silverado 2500HD with this engine can carry up to 3,534 pounds of cargo, while the 3500HD can carry 7,153 pounds, illustrating a key difference between the two trucks.

The other HD engine option for those model years is a 6.6-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel V-8 with an Allison automatic transmission. This engine produces up to 445 horsepower and an astounding 910 pound-feet of torque. A used Silverado 2500HD with this engine can tow up to 18,100 pounds of trailer and carry 3,204 pounds of cargo. These numbers expand even further on a used Silverado 3500HD to 5,518 pounds of cargo and an incredible 23,300 pounds of trailer. Clearly, if you need strong power to tow and haul, then the used Silverado 2500HD or Silverado 3500HD is your best choice.
