Which Used Chevy SUV Is Right for You?

It’s a generally well-accepted fact that there’s a Chevy that’s just right for every driver. And if you happen to be looking for an SUV that matches your lifestyle and driving needs, there’s a very good chance that a used Chevy SUV will be perfect for you. Still, no one wants to scroll through a list of all the used cars for sale in Tomball until they find the one they’ve been dreaming of.
Over the past decade, Chevy has offered a fantastic lineup of SUVs ranging from the very small to the nine-passenger Tahoe and Suburban. While Chevy offers a range of trims that accommodate a whole bunch of wants and needs, it’s simply not possible for every SUV to be perfect for every driver. Therefore, we’ve created this handy guide to help you determine where to start your search for the perfect used SUV from the Chevy lineup. Take a look to determine which Chevy model best suits your needs.
Chevy’s Subcompact and Compact SUVs
You’ve probably heard of the Chevy Trax and the Chevy Trailblazer, but you might not be entirely sure which one is which or which one is best for zipping up and down Main Street as you get all of your daily tasks accomplished.
Chevy Trax
The Trax is the smallest of Chevy’s SUVs. Making its debut for the 2015 model year, the Trax started life as a straightforward, easy-to-live-with subcompact SUV that fits in tight spaces without being too small itself. In fact, the 2015 Trax prided itself on offering 15 separate storage compartments throughout the cabin.
The Chevy Trax received an update in 2017 to catch up with changing technology, upgrading the seven-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Until Chevy discontinued production in 2022, options like heated seats and safety features like a side blind-zone alert made the Trax a top choice for drivers who were interested in a no-fuss SUV.
Chevy rebooted the Trax for the 2024 model year with a lineup that includes the LS, 1RS, LT, ACTIV, and 2RS trims. The Chevy Safety Assist suite of driver assistance technology, 25.6 cu.ft. of cargo space, and an eight-inch infotainment screen are just a few of the many new features that come standard on the latest generation of Trax.
Chevy Trailblazer
This one can be a bit confusing because the Trailblazer has been both a trim level and its own model. It has also been spelled TrailBlazer. The modern Trailblazer debuted in 2021 with a lowercase “b,” which will help you gauge the age of any used models you might check out. For that model year, Chevy made everything all new again, with a refreshed trim lineup full of style updates.
Features include a two-tone roof and safety features like Forward Collision Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking. Even better, the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer offers the option of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Used models are equipped with a standard 1.2L turbocharged inline-three engine with 137 hp or a 1.3L turbocharged version with 155 hp. Starting with the 2024 model, drivers can enjoy the convenience of a standard 11-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Chevy Equinox
There are many things that help the Equinox stand out from the rest of the Chevrolet lineup of used SUVs, but perhaps the most interesting is the availability of a diesel engine.
Starting with the 2018 debut of the third generation, drivers had the choice of outfitting their Equinox with a 170 hp 1.5L engine, a 2.0L engine that cranks things up with 252 hp, or a 1.6L turbo-diesel option. While the diesel engine’s 136 hp may seem disappointing at first glance, the 39 MPG on the highway rating more than makes up for it. The diesel engine was dropped for the 2020 model year, and the 2.0L engine was not included in the 2021 lineup.
The fourth generation of Chevy Equinox made its debut with the 2025 model year, but the third generation saw quite a few upgrades. Available features include leather upholstery with French stitching, a hands-free power liftgate, and a spacious backseat that can accommodate the whole crew.
Medium and Large Chevy SUV Models
Maybe bigger really is better for you. Whether you’re running the kids from one of the local parks to the pool and back again or have exciting adventure plans beyond the Tomball city limits, these models help you out with extra seats and extra cargo space.
Chevy Blazer
The Blazer has a long history, but most recently, the Blazer has been reinvented as a sporty two-row SUV designed to look good as it sweeps down city streets—a feat it definitely achieves.
Starting with the 2019 model year, the Blazer has gained a shining reputation for its glowing performance. It has been offered in a variety of trims, providing drivers with a full array of options to meet their driving needs. Available features range from dual-zone climate control and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity to a Bose premium audio system and heated and ventilated front seats.
In 2020, the Blazer gained a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Originally offered exclusively on the 2LT and 3LT trims, it became the standard engine in 2022. A 3.6L V6 is optional, giving the Blazer 308 hp. All-wheel drive is also optional across the lineup.
Chevy Traverse
Since its introduction in 2009, the three-row Traverse has only seen three generations, with the most recent update in 2024. The first generation continued through the 2017 model year, which means you may encounter fantastic first-gen used Traverse models with plenty of miles left in them.
For the first two generations, the Traverse came with a 3.6L V6 engine, though it was tweaked over the years to provide more and more horsepower. However, the V6 was replaced by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the third generation. The 2018 second generation also provided the Traverse with a complete makeover, offering more room for passengers and up to 98.2 cu.ft. of cargo space with the second and third rows folded.
Perhaps the most exciting update to the Traverse lineup was the 2024 addition of a Z71 trim. Like other Z71 options in Chevy’s stable, the Traverse offers off-roading equipment like custom suspension, all-terrain tires, improved ground clearance, and standard all-wheel-drive with terrain modes.
Chevy Tahoe
Whether you consider Houston or Lake Conroe your ideal weekend getaway, you’ll need room for your crew and all your stuff, too. Since 1995, the Tahoe has offered an exceptional amount of space in a large SUV with impeccable driving manners.
The fourth-generation Tahoe launched in 2015 with a standard 5.3L V8 engine and three rows of seating for up to nine passengers, thanks to an available front bench seat. Designed to be the ultimate family vehicle, some trims include features to keep everyone comfortable for the long haul, including a rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment system and a power sunroof.
The fifth generation of Chevy Tahoe debuted in 2021, again with seat configurations that allow for seven, eight, or nine passengers. Chevy also ensured that Tahoe drivers and passengers had the ultimate in comfort and convenience, with power-adjustable front seats, tri-zone climate control, and a 10.2-inch touchscreen guiding the infotainment system.
While the 5.3L V8 continues to be the standard engine in much of the lineup, an optional 3.0L turbo-diesel inline-six has been part of the lineup since 2021. Offered in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, the diesel Tahoe can tow up to 8,200 lbs, while gasoline models can pull up to 8,400 lbs when properly equipped.
Chevy Suburban
If you find a first-generation Suburban for sale, it is a collector’s piece. The Suburban debuted nearly 100 years ago in 1935. Since then there have been plenty of changes, as you might imagine.
The eleventh-generation Suburban came to the market in 2015. Produced until 2020, models from this generation come with a 355 hp 5.3L V8 engine. In fact, this generation Suburban largely echoes the features and options of the Tahoe with one significant difference: the Suburban has a maximum cargo space of 121.7 cu.ft. compared to 94.7 cu.ft. in the Tahoe.
When the twelfth generation appeared for the 2021 model year, quite a few features were added to the lineup. The RST trim continues the sporty tradition of other Chevy SUVs with huge 22-inch wheels, while the Z71 includes standard four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, and skid plates. Magnetic Ride Control is standard on the Premier trim, and air suspension can be added to the Z71 and High Country trims, allowing drivers to make the Suburban exactly the right vehicle for their needs.
So Many SUVs, So Many Choices
Tomball looks different when you’re behind the wheel of an SUV you love. Whether that’s zipping around town in a used Chevy Trax or preparing for a full family adventure with a used Chevy Suburban, there is an endless array of trims, options, and configurations found in the used Chevy SUVs on the market today. While you may still have to look around to find exactly the right features for your budget, you’ll now at least have an idea of what model and even trim makes the right starting point for you.
