A slightly shorter version of the Suburban, the Tahoe offers the same combination of family-friendliness and rugged adventurism while being a little more agile for navigating urban sprawl.

The current generation of the Chevy Tahoe, introduced in 2021, builds on this history while advancing the SUV into the modern age. It’s still strong with traditional body-on-frame construction, but it adds the latest mechanical prowess and technology. Notable performance features include a limited-slip rear differential for more grip, a Premium Smooth Ride suspension to handle rough pavement, and a full trailering equipment setup to connect haulers. Power and Performance

This police pursuit vehicle contains the GM EcoTec3 5.3L V8 engine with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, which goes from 0 to 60 mph in roughly seven seconds on a regular Tahoe. The power plant is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission, and the electronic gear selector is conveniently located on the dashboard so you can get into drive and get moving. An auxiliary battery adds electrical power to run various accessories like radios and emergency lights.

Although not specifically a tow vehicle, the Tahoe PPV has a 6,000-lb towing capacity and can hold a payload of 1,780 lbs.

Comfort and Functionality

The front seats are shaped so you can climb in while wearing your duty belt, and the driver’s seat has ten-way power adjustments. Using 40/20/40 front bench seats lets you put a third person up front if necessary. Tri-zone automatic climate control plus rear air conditioning keeps the temperatures just right. A rubberized black floor covering resists scuffs and stains. There is also 125.9 cu.ft. of cargo space for everything from weapons to defibrillators.

The Chevy Tahoe PPV has a protected idle function. This allows the engine to stay running but prevents the transmission from being shifted out of Park unless a valid key fob is present. Unlike some modern SUVs, there is a full-size underbody spare tire with a built-in pressure monitor to keep it aired up. Other important add-ons include LED taillamps, flash calibration, two 120-volt power outlets, and a daytime running lamp (DRL) wiring override.

Pursuit Technology

Staying connected is a must, and the Chevy Tahoe PPV lets you do so. It has all the essentials like wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, front and rear USB ports, Bluetooth wireless, and keyless opening and starting. Equipment switches are located on the steering wheel, and lighting calibration is used for low-visibility Surveillance Mode.

There are some excellent safety and security features, too. HD Surround Vision can be viewed on the display, and you get rear pedestrian alert, rear parking assist, and eight years of OnStar Fleet Basics. A 1FL safety package is available with ten other active driver assistance features, but GM made them optional because they know these alerts and aids may become a hindrance during hot pursuit.

The Tahoe SSV: Towing and Off-Road Power

Not every police activity is at maximum speed. Search and rescue, downtown Houston traffic patrol, K9 units, and other tasks require a more down-to-earth vehicle. The Chevrolet Tahoe SSV is an SUV made for special service. It offers many core similarities to the Tahoe PPV, but it zigs in certain areas so you can navigate tougher terrain and more.

Power and Performance

The powertrains on the PPV and SSV are the same, and the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, and auxiliary battery are a perfect match. However, Chevy uses a special towing package that increases the towing capacity to 7,700 lbs while barely affecting the payload. An available max trailering setup brings the capacity to 8,200 lbs, letting you transport equipment, vehicles, mobile command centers, and even patrol boats for Trinity Bay. A Tow/Haul driving mode and Trailer Hitch Guidance are included.

While the PPV is available in 2WD or 4WD, the Tahoe SSV is exclusively 4WD, so you have the extra grip on rough driving surfaces. GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control system gives you more traction and less body roll. The last major change is that the SSV switches to all-season tires on 18-inch wheels, better for general-purpose driving. If you regularly head beyond the city to state parks and other wilderness sites, you can swap to all-terrain tires and 20-inch wheels with a two-speed transfer case.

Comfort, Functionality, and Special Service Technology

There are small but notable variations between the Tahoe PPV and SSV. The driver’s seat has eight-way power adjustments and a more traditional design. The DRL override becomes an optional add-on. Remote Start is standard, so officers can cool down or warm up the vehicle before hopping in. Finally, the 1FL Safety Package is standard equipment, since you’ll spend more time in situations where driver aids are beneficial.
