Getting There

The 2026 Chevy Trax and the 2026 Nissan Kicks are similar in terms of power, but the Trax takes the lead in performance.

Under the hood of every 2026 Chevy Trax is a turbocharged EcoTec 1.2L engine, which gives your teen driver 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The 2026 Nissan Kicks has a larger 2.0L engine with 141 horsepower. However, the Kicks only offers 140 lb-ft of torque, which is much lower than the Trax.

Why do we want higher torque? More torque means quicker acceleration, and while you don’t necessarily want your teen to think they can take their Trax to Houston Motorsports Park, you do want them to be able to merge safely and have a more effortless experience when dealing with traffic as a newbie.

As far as fuel economy, the 2026 Trax is comparable to most subcompact SUVs with a rating of 30 MPG combined, and the Kicks is similar. Will this impressive fuel economy prevent your teen from spending way too much time at Buc-ee’s or QT? Probably not, but you can be confident you did your best.

Staying Safe

Much of the 2026 Nissan Kicks’ safety offerings are the same, though there are some notable differences. While we commend Nissan for giving the Kicks features like blind-spot warnings and traffic-sign recognition, it simply doesn’t have Buckle to Drive or Teen Driver technology.

Offered in the LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and ACTIV trims, the Chevy Trax comes equipped with a standard eight-inch infotainment touchscreen connected to a four-speaker audio system. However, on the Trax LT and above, that becomes an 11-inch touchscreen with a six-speaker audio system. The 2026 Nissan Kicks is offered in the S, SV, and SR trims, all of which come standard with a four-speaker setup.

More trims mean more opportunities for your teen to get exactly what they want in their new car, which will hopefully entice them into appreciating their vehicle as a long-term investment. For example, drivers of the Trax 2RS and ACTIV will enjoy standard power-adjustable heated seats.
