The Legacy of Chevy's Favorite Nameplates

Chevrolet has a long history in the automotive world, having gotten its start back in 1911. Since its inception, there have been countless innovative advancements and iconic vehicles produced by the manufacturer, each with its own unique story and history.

Malibu

When you hear the name Malibu, you probably think of California sun and surf. It’s true that the Malibu got its name from the exclusive beachfront community just west of Los Angeles, but the car itself took another path entirely, making it a perfect fit for those of us who call Galveston our waterfront.

Today’s Malibu is a four-door midsize sedan that serves equally well as a commuter car or a family vehicle. However, the Malibu didn’t start out that way. Actually, it wasn’t even its own vehicle at first, but rather the top trim on a completely different Chevy car. In 1964, the folks at Chevrolet decided to make a new model of the popular Chevelle, a broad-based model that included coupes, convertibles, sedans, and station wagons. The 1964 Chevelle Malibu proved to be a classic with a powerful V-8 engine and performance to match. By the early '70s, the Chevelle Malibu had proved so popular that NASCAR drivers started lining up to get one for their stock car races!

However, by the late '70s, the Energy Crisis had dimmed the public’s affair with thirsty V8 models like the Chevelle Malibu. So, Chevy decided to keep the name but attach it to a smaller, more fuel-efficient car. Still offered as a coupe, sedan, and station wagon, the 1978 Malibu was the first time this name was given to an individual model, although most car enthusiasts call it the fourth generation Malibu. Unfortunately, this model of the Malibu failed to catch a wave and was discontinued in 1983.

That seemed to be the end of the Malibu, but like all great car names, Chevy knew that it had to find a car worthy of the designation. In 1997, Chevy brought back the Malibu, but as a front-wheel drive sedan. It proved so popular that it won Car of the Year from Motor Trend magazine. This is the Malibu we know and love today, with nine generations and counting. If you are looking for a sturdy, reliable, and sporty sedan, then a used Chevy Malibu is the car for you. We’ll just pretend the name doesn’t have anything to do with California!

Chevy Silverado

Many people consider Texas pickup truck country, and we are not going to argue with that. Folks in Texas know the value of a good truck that is rugged, dependable, and capable, like the Chevy Silverado. It seems like Chevy has always been building Silverado trucks. However, that isn’t really the case.

The Silverado began life as a top trim level on an existing truck, just like the Malibu. In 1975, Chevy began building a new C/K truck with added creature comforts and finer finishes. The designers chose the name Silverado, and it stuck. So, when it was decided to launch a new lineup of trucks for the 1999 model year, Chevy chose to use the name Silverado.

After that, there was no turning back. Those first Silverado models featured a full-size, half-ton model called the Silverado 1500, as well as three different heavy-duty trucks, the Silverado 1500HD, 2500HD, and 3500HD. Each successive model was heavier and had increased towing and hauling capabilities. However, by the time the second generation of Silverado trucks came around in 2007, Chevy had stopped building the Silverado 1500HD, focusing instead on the other three models.

Today, the Silverado models are the most versatile trucks available, with more different features, engines, and cab styles than offered by any other automaker. This lets you choose the exact specifications of the Chevy Silverado truck you want, so you know it can provide the capabilities you desire. If you want to know that you are going to get the job done right, then you need to drive a Chevy Silverado.

Suburban/Tahoe

Some people believe that bigger is better, and who are we to disagree? Like the saying goes, everything is bigger in Texas. When it comes to supersized models, nothing can compare to Chevy’s two full-size, three-row SUVs, the Suburban and the Tahoe.

The Suburban model is the older of the two and is the longest-running vehicle name in automotive history. The first Suburban was introduced in 1935 as an 8-passenger station wagon built on a truck’s frame. This was a landmark in the development of the SUV, with a vehicle that could provide plenty of room for large families and rugged utility for workers. The real breakthrough came in 1957 when Chevy began offering a four-wheel drivetrain on the fourth generation Suburban. This helped push the boundaries of the SUV, allowing folks to take their Suburban on a path less traveled, the off-road trail.

The path was a little shorter for the Suburban’s smaller sibling, the Tahoe. The first Chevy Tahoe was introduced in 1995, which was basically a re-branding of the KS Blazer. The reason was that Chevy saw the vehicle being purchased and used by more suburban families than expected, so the name change was made to capitalize the vehicle’s changing target audience. The move worked, as the Tahoe became one of the most popular SUVs offered by Chevy. Also, the first Tahoes were offered as two-door or four-door models. This changed in 2000 when Chevy began offering the second generation Tahoe as a four-door SUV only.

These days, the Suburban and Tahoe are bigger and better than ever, featuring larger engines, roomier passenger compartments, and insane amounts of cargo space. The space on both of these models is so voluminous that you feel like you can fit a large part of the Lone Star State in their trunks. For Texans, both of these models offer full-size SUVs with plenty of space for all your friends, family, and belongings.

Equinox

The crossover category of SUVs is relatively new when compared to full-size and midsize models. However, the crossover has quickly become one of the most popular vehicle types, and the Chevy Equinox has done an amazing job of eclipsing the competition.

The first Equinox was introduced in 2005, making it a relative newcomer when compared to some of the other models, such as the Corvette and Suburban. However, the Equinox has quickly established itself as one of the most popular models in the Chevy lineup. A used model makes a great commuter car, as well as an ideal first car for proud parents looking to buy a safe, reliable, and fuel-efficient crossover for their kids. The trunk space is surprisingly large for a compact model like the Equinox, while there is plenty of room to seat up to five passengers comfortably.
The Equinox is currently in its third generation, with each successive model year offering more safety and infotainment features. In addition, you can find a used Equinox with all-wheel drive if you are looking for added traction on your crossover. No matter which year you choose, you are going to get a sporty crossover that is fun to drive when you buy a used Chevy Equinox.

Traverse

For some people, a two-row midsize SUV or crossover like the Equinox just doesn’t have enough space. There are times for many of us when we need to drive around with more than five passengers. However, by the same token, a full-size SUV like a Tahoe or Suburban is just too big for many drivers. There are those who don’t feel comfortable maneuvering a larger model, especially if they need to do street parking. This is why Chevy came up with the Chevy Traverse in 2009.

The three-row Traverse gives drivers the option to seat up to 7 passengers in a configuration similar to a minivan, but without any of the performance, looks, and handling issues many people associate with that type of vehicle. The Traverse’s power is provided by a V6 engine with enough acceleration to make you happy while not adversely affecting the vehicle’s fuel economy. The Traverse quickly filled the needs of many suburban families that needed a three-row SUV, but one that was more affordable and had better fuel economy than a full-size model. This formula proved so successful that the Traverse is now in its second generation and was even named one of the ten best midsize SUVs of 2020 by Kelley Blue Book.
