If you’re buying a car in Texas, a handful of models are quite popular among the populace, especially in the Chevy variety. If you’re visiting, you might encounter these vehicles more frequently than others. But if you’re shopping for a new ride or looking to pick up a pre-owned Chevy from a used car dealer, you might have to race to the dealership to grab a particular brand due to its popularity. Otherwise, it might be gone from the lot by the time you get there. If you need a quick rundown of the five most popular Chevy cars in Texas, here’s the list.

No. 5 – Chevy Equinox

The mid-sized/compact crossover SUV has grown more and more popular over the years thanks to its crossover appeal; it’s not quite a station wagon but not quite big enough to be a full-sized SUV. The Chevy Equinox is one of those unique vehicles that live up to every inch of what a compact SUV should be. Not only does it manage to combine a wagon, minivan, and SUV design into one, but it also provides some powerful engine options and can even be used for light towing. Therefore, it is no surprise that, according to EverQuote1, the Chevy Equinox makes the list of one of the top 30 most popular vehicles in Texas.

Even though the Equinox isn’t known for being a powerhouse performer on the road, it is known for being exceptionally reliable, managing to last over and beyond the call of duty. The available 2.0L turbo is more than enough for highway driving, while the optional diesel will provide you with an exceptional fuel economy. The ability to surpass 100,000 miles and keep going strong makes the Equinox an easy favorite when traversing across the long stretches of highways and byways in Texas.

No. 4 – Chevy Cruze

The Chevy Cruze may be a compact sedan, but it became a surprising hit thanks to its highly rated safety, modern sensibilities, and the vehicle’s sleek style. Again, much like the Chevy Equinox, the Cruze isn’t known for its formidable power output, since it only sports a 1.4L turbocharged I4 gasoline engine or a 1.6L I4 diesel. Instead, the vehicle is rated relatively highly for its fuel economy. At 34 MPG combined with its gasoline engine and an exceptional 37 MPG combined with its diesel, driving the Cruze is a great way to save money at the pump.

Interestingly enough, despite GM deciding to discontinue the Cruze in the United States, the car is still a big seller in Texas and throughout various other parts of the world. The excellent fuel economy, compact design, long-running mileage, and the complement of features such as WiFi, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, make the Cruze an excellent car for young artists, college students, and budding workers getting a fresh start in Texas.

No. 3 – Chevy Impala

The Chevy Impala is one of the most storied and recognizable names in the Chevy brand. It dates back to the burgeoning muscle car era, where it made its debut as a full-sized luxury town car. Unfortunately, the Impala didn’t always seem to have an ideal design direction. While it’s an easily recognizable model from Chevy, it has been phased out and then reintroduced a couple of times over its history.

However, the latest incarnation (which has recently come to an end with the 2020 model year) has resulted in the Impala becoming a top seller in Texas. A used eighth, ninth, or tenth generation Impala still makes a great car. After making a return to the market as a full-size sedan, the Impala slowly began to transform into a luxury vehicle, taking on a decidedly different and more stylish tone over the tenth generation.

Newer generations of the car lost its performance edge, going from the upper-end 5.3L V8 fitted in the ninth-generation SS trim, all the down to a 3.6L V6 in the tenth generation. But in exchange for that power, you will find plenty of modern features to keep you comfortable. Despite its popularity in Texas, the Impala just wasn’t enough to keep the line going beyond the 2020 year model. The good news is that you can still grab a Chevy Impala from a used car dealer, so not all is lost.

No. 2 – Chevy Malibu

While Texas may be known as the Lone Star State and stereotypically associated with cowboy hats, guns, and pickup trucks, most of the state’s popular Chevy models are not pickup trucks. The Chevy Malibu is the second most popular Chevy in Texas, another mid-ranged sedan best known for its fuel economy rather than its horsepower or torque. The Malibu may have started as a muscle car, but it became an affordable midsize, four-door sedan when it made its return in the late 1990s.

However, over the 2000s, the Malibu underwent several significant revisions until it finally found its niche with the eighth and ninth generations. Like the Impala, the newer Malibu models took on more luxury elements than previous iterations. Despite the Malibu moving away from its powerhouse beginnings, the seventh, eighth, and ninth-generation Malibus did quite well as economical sedans. Highlights include reliable safety and fuel economy ratings.

Like the Impala, the engines seem to be getting smaller and smaller with each new generation. The largest engine you will find in a late model used Malibu is a 2.0L turbocharged I4 that produces up to 250 hp. However, the fuel economy also got better with each new generation. If you can find a Malibu Hybrid, you can even enjoy a fuel economy of 46 MPG combined. Altogether, it’s easy to see why this would be a great family car in Texas, perfect for the long drives across our massive state.

No. 1 – Chevy Silverado

It may not be a car, but there’s no denying that Chevy’s most popular vehicle in Texas is the Chevy Silverado. No surprise here since Texas is often considered the pickup capital of America. The Silverado’s popularity is due to several factors, including its consistent performance, high towing capacity, large payload, and a variety of trims designed for low-end, mid-range, off-road, and luxury purposes.

Although the Silverado 2500 and 3500 are better suited for heavy towing, it’s the Silverado 1500 that’s always stood head and shoulders above the rest as the most popular model of Chevy’s pickup truck family. The Silverado 1500 is so prevalent in Texas that GM even made a special Chevy Silverado 1500 Texas Edition, which comes with several luxury, performance, and convenience packages bundled together, along with the unique Texas badging.

Even though many of the most popular Chevy models in Texas are cars, our state lives up to its cowboy reputation by putting the Silverado in first place. If you plan on getting a Silverado, then you’ll fit right in driving it around in Texas. After all, pickups and Texas are meant for each other.
