Chevy Silverado 1500: A Truck for Work and Play

The Chevy Silverado 1500 has been a crowd favorite for decades and has been one of the top-selling trucks in the US since its first generation was introduced for the 1999 model year. However, the Silverado name actually dates back much longer as it was originally used for the luxury trims of the popular Chevy C/K series pickups. Since 1999, there have been four generations of the Silverado, which have included several innovations such as Chevy's first hybrid model. Though the hybrid was discontinued after only a few years of production, the Silverado 1500 continues to offer innovative performance for truck drivers.

After four generations of adding more powerful engines, better aerodynamics, and new cab styles to accommodate passengers in more comfort, the current 2021 Silverado 1500 is better than ever. Back in 1999, the first Silverado 1500 models were rated to tow up to 8,200 lbs and haul up to 1,965 lbs. Now in 2021, the Chevy Silverado 1500 is capable of towing up to 13,300 lbs and hauling up to 2,280 lbs. This truck has come a long way over the years.

A Decade of Chevy Silverado 1500 Trucks

If you're planning to purchase a used Silverado 1500, you can still have a hard-working truck with much of the comfort and convenience you expect from newer Chevy trucks. Between 2010 and 2020, the Silverado spans across its second, third, and fourth generations. Going back even to 2010, Chevy offered technology like Bluetooth, rearview cameras, electronic stability control, and a trailer brake controller. Vortec engines were installed in Silverado 1500 trucks until 2013, when they were replaced with the more fuel-efficient Ecotec engines. Starting in 2019, the Ecotec gasoline engines were joined by a Duramax diesel option.

In 2012 models, upgrades to standard equipment in all models included hill start assist, trailer sway control, and a touchscreen infotainment system. The infotainment system on most trims was loaded with Chevy's MyLink program to interface with smartphones as well as OnStar and has USB ports to stream audio. Other features like heated and cooled seats, heated exterior mirrors, trailering mirrors, and auto-dimming rearview mirrors are options for certain trims of the first-generation Silverado 1500. However, the High Country trim was added in 2013 as the first luxury trim available for a Chevy truck. With the introduction of this trim, the Silverado 1500 reached a new level of comfort, and a used Silverado 1500 High Country makes for an incredible deal.

Small refreshes were offered over the years, such as in 2016, when LED tail lights, Intellibeam headlights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and HD radio were features added to certain trims. But 2019 brought the biggest changes with the introduction of the fourth-generation trucks. In this most recent generation, Chevy trucks were made lighter and stronger with reinforced steel frames, have improved suspensions for a smoother ride, more responsive brakes with longer life, and a new exterior design for improved aerodynamics. Other features like the industry's largest truck bed, a powered tailgate, a cargo bed outlet, and advanced trailering technology bring the Silverado 1500 into the next decade.

What's New for 2021 Silverado 1500

With the newest Silverado 1500 models coming out for 2021, Chevy delivers a truck that is loaded with technology and safety features, has outstanding towing capability, offers a comfortable interior cabin, boasts best-in-class fuel efficiency, and is offered at an affordable starting price of $28,600. If you need a light-duty truck, the Silverado 1500 has a lot of new upgrades for 2021, not the least of which is the option for a diesel engine for more trims and a brand-new multifunction tailgate.

Half the fun of buying a new truck is building the model to suit your own needs. Chevy offers as many options as ever to customize your truck with different cab sizes, bed sizes, and packages. New trailering tech will make towing easier than it's ever been, from a camera with 15 views to a full suite of trailering technology to assist with every step of the towing process. Upgraded braking systems, trailer theft prevention, trailer sway control, and camera views of the hitch are just a few of the features to make trailering a snap. The multi-flex tailgate has multiple positions to make getting into and loading the bed much more functional, and available LED cargo bed lighting means you can still get things done even in the dark. You even have 12 tie-downs to secure any load into the bed, far more than any other competitor.

When it comes to technology and infotainment, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now available, and the myChevrolet app allows you to enjoy the ease of connectivity with your vehicle even when you're not in it. Other tech features like a 4G WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth, available wireless charging, and a premium Bose audio system will make life on the road so entertaining that you might not want to go home. Additional technology in the form of available driver-assisted safety features will keep your passengers safe on the road. With features like forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, auto emergency braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and a safety alert seat, you will be able to drive your Silverado 1500 with confidence.
