Little Red Corvette
Once GM designers pieced together a concept car, it needed a name. Someone called the founder of the All-American Soap Box Derby and he suggested "Corvette."
The rest, they say, is history.
The Corvette made its debut at the 1953 New York Auto Show. But 10 years later the 1963 gave the world one of the most engrossing and completely delightful automotive designs of all time. Earl's successor as GM design chief, Bill Mitchell, designed a new body for the Corvette with a high waistline, a chiseled prow and sharply creased fenders and called it the Sting Ray, which is featured in this billboard.
Thanks to a new chassis, the 1963 Corvette offered the pubic a roadster and a fastback coupe.
When Motor Trend tested a the '63 Corvette, it went from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and consumed the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds at 102 mph.
The Sting Ray became the most popular Corvette, with more than 10,594 coupes and 10,919 convertibles sold.
In 1982, Prince wrote one of the most famous songs featuring the sports car. "Little Red Corvette" went on to be one of his his biggest hits, his first to reach top-10 status in America.
