Like the Chevrolet Blazer, the new Chevy Trailblazer doesn’t have much in common with the previous vehicle that shares its name. The older model (spelled “TrailBlazer”) was a truck-based SUV, while the new Trailblazer sits atop a car-based platform.

According to North Houston Chevrolet, buyers can get the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer in one of five trim levels, listed as L, LS, LT, Activ and RS. The base engine is a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that generates 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, connected to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This engine is only offered with front-wheel drive.

Drivers looking for some more power can choose a 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 155 hp and 174 lb-ft, matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

Fuel economy for the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is outstanding. The 1.2-liter engine returns an EPA-estimated 28 mpg city/31 mpg highway.* The 1.3-liter unit with front-wheel drive gets 29 mpg city/33 mpg highway, while all-wheel-drive versions check in with 26 mpg city/30 mpg highway.

Off-roaders will love the Activ trim, which is specially tuned for driving on remote trails. Helping the Activ achieve off-road performance are unique 17-inch Hankook Sport Terrain all-season tires, a restyled front fascia with more ground clearance, upgraded shocks and a dual exhaust system with trapezoidal exhaust tips. This trim also comes with roof rails and a two-tone roof.

The Trailblazer’s passengers will love the stylish interior, while the driver will appreciate the easy to use infotainment system. Optional features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a power liftgate.

There’s ample space to store cargo, with 54 cubic feet to play with when the 60/40-split second-row seats are folded. Passengers can take advantage of the Trailblazer’s innovative storage space for stowing smaller items. There’s a total of 3.5 liters of space in the center console and 4.4-liters under the armrest.

Standard safety gear includes lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, forward collision mitigation, a rear-seat passenger reminder, automatic emergency braking and front-pedestrian braking. Available features include a high-definition rear vision camera, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. As of this writing, neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA has crash-tested the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The 1LT opens the door to several available safety features, including lane-change alert, rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Buyers who choose the 2LT get a host of additional features and options. The RS and Premier trims get many available features, including 21-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree camera, forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

The optional Safety Alert Seat vibrates on the left or right side when it senses danger is imminent. Other available features include automatic high beams, a wireless charging system, Wi-Fi, additional USB ports and a panoramic sunroof.
